"Victoria Harbour"

From ties to the beautiful landmark of HK-Victoria Harbour, originally known as Hong Kong Harbour, is a natural harbour situated between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula. Its deep water port and wide stretched coast made it one of the three best natural harbours in the world.

Ringed by islands and mountains, the harbour serves as a natural shelter for ships, and is key to Hong Kong's economic and tourism development.

Major companies and banks in Hong Kong have long enjoyed the undisputed harbour view and became part of view themselves. Behind the tall sky scrapers in Hong Kong Island stands the famous Victoria Peak (also known as “The Peace Peak” or 太平山).

With limited flatland for urban development, the government started reclamation project more than 100 years ago, to increase land supply, but have to scarify part of the precious harbour where Hong Kong built its fame.

"Peak Tower"

Located at an elevation of 396 metres or 156 metres below the summit of Victoria Peak is the famous new Peak Tower, designed by British architect Terry Farrell. It was opened to public in 1997, same year as the handover of Hong Kong to China. The tower also houses the final station of the peak tram.

The tower's design revolves around Hong Kong’s past, present and future. The solid podium depicts the solid foundation of the city in the past, while the present is represented by the open space between the podium and the roof. Finally, bowl-shaped roof, which symbolizes a hand expression of respect by cupping one hand on the other before chest, illustrates the future.

The Peak Tower was imprinted on the back of HKD 20 banknotes issued in 2003 by 2 of the 3 notes issuing banks, China Bank Hong Kong and HSBC, of which many are still in circulation.

"Hong Kong Tram Ding-ding"

It started operation in 1904 and ran across Hong Kong island from east to west. Bodies of the first fleet of 26 tramcars were built in the UK and assembled in Hung Hom, Kowloon. The tramcars were all single-deck back then. 10 tramcars were designed for first class passengers and the other 16 were for third class passengers. Fares for the 1st and the 3rd class were 10 cents and 5 cents respectively. Nowadays, we only have one class, one fare. An transition that echoed the evolution of the society.

"Firework Celebration"

Gunpowder was one of the Four Great Inventions of ancient China. It was originally used in weapons by the military to prevent invasion. Yet, it is also a key ingredient for the magical firework that captures the heart of so many.

Fireworks and firecrackers were essential parts of Chinese celebrations. People believe that firecrackers can scare away evil spirits and bring good luck.

However, since the 1967 strike, private ownership of firecrackers has been regulated by the government.

Nowadays, annual New Year Fireworks extravaganza along Victoria Harbour is one of the city's landmark events organized by the government and sponsored by different large corporations.

Fireworks, Firecrackers and Star Ferry all evolve just as Hong Kong constantly redefines its role in different generations.
