Early in the summer of 2008 Maryknoll Convent School celebrated the 71st anniversary of the commencement of its school building and concurrently the declaration of the iconic building as a Historic Monument by the Government of Hong Kong.
What started as a commemorative brochure to mark the occasion evolved into a more committed project, hence this volume now in the Reader’s hands. For as one admires the architectural merits of the building, once has to ponder the inspired vision and love that led to it all.
The story has to begin at the beginning: Who were the Maryknoll Sisters? What led them to cross the oceans and serve in this distant land? How did it all start?
And who are the people that came to use and inbabit this building over the years? What went on here? To answer these questions Maryknoll alumnae over the decades were contacted and invited to share their stories. Snatches of memories dating from the pre-World War II era up to the very present poured in from all corners of the world.
