Early portraits focus closely on mothers with their infant or toddler, tracing physical resonances and subtle divergences; later works expand into living environments, revealing more context about the family unit through furnishings, space, and everyday household objects. Paired with excerpts from Kim’s interviews with mothers and children, each portrait tells a highly personal story about identify formation and young people’s evolving sense of self, beyond the confines of heritage and biology. The narratives also show that questions like,“Who are you?” and “Where are you from?” rarely yield simple answers.

Encompassing families from six continents, the m<other> 光影廊道 project recently expanded its conversation to include adoptive families. In her quest to delve deeper and better contextualize her subjects’ lived experiences, the book also features Kim’s interviews with a number of scholars and other experts discussing and analyzing her work through the lenses of psychology, anthropology, art history, and society.
