THE KINSEY COLLECTION: SHARED TREASURES OF BERNARD AND SHIRLEY KINSEY, WHERE ART AND HISTORY INTERSECT presents the personal journey of one family, a journey into history through art and artifacts. The objects represented here, over a hundred in all, transform our perspective on the African American experience. It is not the history we learned in school. The journey begins at "The Door of No Return," compelling readers to retrace the path that enslaved people were forced to take to the New World. For those who made that voyage, it was a world that would soon be filled with uncertainty, fear, suffering, and tragedy- but ultimately growth, success, triumph, and joy.
THE KINSEY COLLECTION reflects a rich cultural and historical heritage that the Kinseys are preserving for future generations. It includes works by African American artists such as Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Jonathan Green, William H. Johnson, Jacob Lawrence, and Henry O. Tanner, as well as documents and artifacts related to figures such as Frederick Douglass, Phillis Wheatley, Alain Locke, Malcolm X, and many others.
THE KINSEY COLLECTION has been featured in the national media and exhibited at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida, the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science in Tallahassee, Florida, and the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. From March 2013 - 2016, the Kinsey Collection will be featured at the American Adventure Pavilion, Epcot Theme Park, Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
